HIVES are information centres for Forces personnel and their families. To find out about relocation, local unit and civilian facilities, places of interest, schools, housing, healthcare facilities, employment and training opportunities in your location follow the link to the regional HIVE blog or download the area overview from the right-hand panel.

Birmingham HIVE

Serving Birmingham, Hampstead, Selly Oak, Harborne, Edgbaston, Moseley, Dawberry Close, Bournville, King’s Heath. Information on Lichfield is also available from Birmingham HIVE. The HIVE can provide information to permanent staff and trainees from all three services living and working in the Birmingham area.

Royal Centre for Defence Medicine (RCDM) is situated just outside the centre of Birmingham. RCDM will issue information relating to individuals' postings, useful telephone numbers, staff training and development, equality and diversity, safety, health and safety, security and more.

The HIVE can provide further details on unit facilities.
An outreach HIVE service is provided to Lichfield HIVE.

Chepstow HIVE

Serving Beachley Barracks, Old Coach Road, Wyvern, St Ewan’s Estates Beachley and Brecon. 

Beachley Barracks is well equipped with a large education centre, a gymnasium and a library. At the centre of the camp is the former cookhouse, now re-built and providing a multiuse facility including dining hall, NAAFI shop, Junior Ranks and NCO Mess, hairdressers, plus an IT Suite. The Wyvern Estate is home to the Little Scamps Pre-school and nursery and the Coffee Pot cafe.

Chester HIVE

Serving The Dale Barracks

Chester is located in the North West of England and both Liverpool and Manchester are easily accessible. The Dale Barracks is situated 2 miles from Chester City Centre, close to Chester Zoo and Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet Village. The Welsh Border is also close by, so trips to the coastal towns of Rhyl and Llandudno are within day trip distance. Bus routes run from just outside the camp and there is a park and ride facility close by. Chester has a wide selection of shops, pubs and restaurants both within the city centre and in outskirt retail parks. Chester also has a racecourse which hosts a number of events alongside the racing calendar.

Home to 1 Royal Welsh, The Dale Barracks on-camp facilities include a large gymnasium, which has a modern air conditioned cardio vascular suite and weights room, squash courts, floodlit sports pitch, large outside green areas with sports pitches, medical and dental centres, Army Learning Centre, Londis shop, and HUB bar and lounge area. Within the SFA area is a Community Centre which houses a cafeteria, bar, indoor children’s play and provides a number of activities for families. To the rear of the Community Centre is the Welfare Complex, where the HIVE, Welfare Office, Midwife and Health Visitor Clinics are located. There is also an AWS run building called the “Hughes Centre” where a wide selection of community activities take place. The under 5’s Pre-school is also situated on the SFA estate.

Hereford HIVE

Serving Hereford.

Hereford Garrison is split into two main areas, Credenhill and Stirling Estate, approximately 6 miles apart. Please contact the HIVE once you have an address so that the right information can be given to you prior to your move.

The Unit has excellent facilities, some of which are available for use by dependants, such as the gym and the Aquatic Centre. Timetables for these are available from the HIVE. For military personnel there is the Officer’s Mess and the WOs’/SGTs’ mess, an all ranks bar, Army Learning Centre, Library and hairdressers.

Stafford HIVE

Serving MOD Stafford.

MOD Stafford is in the West Midlands to the north of Stafford in the heart of surrounding countryside. The HIVE can provide you with further information about the surrounding area.

On camp, MOD Stafford has a Londis shop, a gym and sauna open to Service personnel and their dependants. Off camp the Dixon Community Centre holds regular coffee mornings and a parent and toddlers group. The Beacon Amenties Centre is off camp and is available to hire for private functions.

St Athan HIVE

Serving St Athan and West Camp. Also provides information cover for Haverford West.

St Athan is situated in a quiet and beautiful countryside area, with its own beach in the Vale of Glamorgan about three miles from Cardiff International Airport.

Llantwit Major (Llanilltud Fawr) (under 2 miles) is the closest town. It would be approximately a few minutes drive but a good 20 minute walk.

Barry is approximately 11 miles away and is easily accessible by road or bus.

Bridgend is approximately 11 miles away and is easily accessible by road, bus or train.

Cardiff is approximately 18 miles away and is easily accessible by road, bus or train.

All the facilities on St Athan station are available to service personnel and their dependants. Facilities include a swimming pool, gym, golf club, cinema, learning centres, medical centre, hairdressers, Post Office and more.

Tern Hill HIVE

Serving Tern Hill, Shrewsbury and MOD Donnington.

Clive Barracks in Tern Hill is currently the home of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Irish Regiment. Facilities on camp include a Unit gym, medical and dental centres, and an Army Learning & LearnDirect Centre with free internet access. The Service families accommodation estates are within walking distance of the barracks, and include a primary school, nursery, Army and Air Cadets’ building, Unit Welfare Office.

The HIVE is located within the Unit Welfare Office. The R IRISH Community Centre is located centrally on Hedley Way, and incorporates the Coffee Pot, bar (open Friday evenings), parents and toddlers defe groups, health visitor clinics, a children’s soft play area, youth clubs and free internet access.
