2nd Infantry Training Battalion

The 2nd Infantry Training Battalion (2 ITB) at ITC Catterick is responsible for soldiers under training (SUTs) joining any of the five Regiments of Footguards, The Parachute Regiment or The Brigade of Gurkhas.

Additionally, 2 ITB also delivers Phase 2 training for the Junior Entry Infantry recruits from the Army Foundation College at Harrogate and the Army Training Regiment Winchester, and Phase 2 training for the Infantry element of the Territorial Army.

PARAs

The Parachute Regiment Training Company is the only unit that trains individuals that want to be Paratroopers (PARAs).

It is made up of 7 training platoons:

  • Arnhem Platoon
  • Athens Platoon
  • Breville Platoon
  • Bruneval Platoon
  • Normandy Platoon
  • Oudna Platoon
  • Rhine Platoon
All platoons are named after significant battles that The Parachute Regiment took part in during World War 2.

The Company is commanded by a Parachute Regiment Major that has served in 1, 2 or 3 PARA (possibly all three). The rest of the instructors are also from one of the three Parachute Battalions and all have operational experience.

Guards

The Guards Training Company is responsible for the Foot Guards Combat Infantryman's Course run at ITC Catterick. It trains recruits from all five Foot Guards Regiments - Grenadiers, Coldstream, Scots, Irish and Welsh.

The Foot Guards course is two weeks longer than the standard Combat Infantryman's Course for Line Infantry. The extra time is spent covering ceremonial foot and arms drill training, which enables Guardsmen to move straight from training on to Ceremonial Duties in London.

There are currently ten Platoons running at various stages of training.

Gurkhas

Gurkha Company is made up of 6 platoons commanded by Nepali Gurkha Officers.

The Company commanded by a British Major from the Royal Gurkha Rifles. The remainder of the training staff are drawn from across the Brigade of Gurkhas, with the majority coming from the infantry units. The course is 37 weeks long, takes a Nepali youth and moulds him into a British Army soldier.

Anzio

Anzio Company is the last of the four training Companies within 2 ITB. It's made up of 4 platoons, each of which is named after the location of a significant battle.

  • Ypres Platoon
  • Chindit Platoon
  • Barrossa Platoon
  • Crimea Platoon
The Company name is derived from the Anzio landing of 22-29 January 1944.
