166th Sovereign's Parade
General Sir David Richards GCB CBE DSO ADC Gen Chief of the Defence Staff, representing Her Majesty The Queen, was the Reviewing Officer at the 166th Sovereign's Parade on Friday 12th August 2011.
Commissioning Course 103 Prize Winners
The Sword of Honour, awarded to the Officer Cadet considered by the Commandant to be the best of the course, was presented to Senior Under Officer (SUO) Calvin James Smith.
SUO Smith, aged 23, was born in the British Military Hospital Rinteln (Germany) and moved around Germany, Cyprus and the UK with his parents, his father being firstly in the REME and then the Light Dragoons. He went to the Duke of York’s Royal Military School, Dover and thence to Swansea University where he gained a BSc in Sports Science.
He was in the Wales Universities Office Training Corps, in which he obtained a TA Commission and then had a gap-year Commission with 21 Signal Regiment.
He has organised a sky-diving expedition to the USA and has played Army under-20, under-23 and A team rugby.
Whilst at the RMAS SUO Smith was Captain of the Sandhurst Cup team. He is to be commissioned into the Parachute Regiment.
The Overseas Sword, awarded to the overseas cadet considered by the Commandant to be the best of the intake, was presented to Cadet Corporal Hisham Mohammad Naser Alidmat of Jordan.
Cadet Corporal Hisham, aged 24, was born in Zirqa and brought up in Mafraq. He attended the military wing of Mu’tah University and gained a BA in English Literature. He is posted to the Jordanian 3rd Armoured Division after the RMAS.
The Queen's Medal, awarded to the Officer Cadet who gains the highest score in military, practical and academic subjects, was presented to Junior Under Officer (JUO) Clement Barber.
JUO Barber, aged 23, was born in Birkenhead and brought up in Chester, where he went to the King’s School. He obtained a 1st Class Honours degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Bristol University.
JUO Barber obtained a TA Commission in 2008 and went to BATUS with the Queen’s Dragoon Guards Battlegroup. He has represented the Academy at cricket and rugby.
JUO Barber is to be commissioned into the Army Air Corps.
