Defence and International Affairs

The Department of Defence and International Affairs (DIA) in Faraday Hall provides Officer Cadets with an understanding of the international, political and strategic context in which the British Armed Forces operate and helps develop intellectual qualities and professional knowledge. Cadets are taught using a mixture of central lectures and seminars, with the emphasis on developing understanding and conceptual thinking through discussion.

The DIA syllabus covers five main areas:

  • International security
  • European security
  • British security
  • The law of armed conflict
  • Regional conflict and the use of military power

At the end of the course there is a prize for the best DIA Commandant's Research Paper, an essay of 2,500 words.

DIA also supports the Late Entry Officer Course at Sandhurst and teaches the Military Analysis course to Captains as part of their preparation for promotion to Major.

DIA can be reached by completing the Contact Us form.
