A Junior Soldier always has someone to turn to at ATFC Winchester. The Unit Welfare Officer, WRVS and Chaplains all provide welfare support, to help when times get tough.

 

Welfare Team

The Welfare Team at ATFC Winchester are responsible for the assistance and advice given when dealing with the welfare issues of Junior Soldiers, permanent staff and their families. An immediate 'drop in' service is available, although it is preferred that those requiring assistance make an appointment first.

This service also extends to the families of Junior Soldiers, although in most cases they should first contact the OC or 2IC of the relevant Training Squadron.

 

WRVS

The WRVS provides friendly non-military support to Junior Soldiers, some of whom may feel lonely in what could be their first time away from home.

 

Faith

Chaplains - normally referred to as 'padres' - represent their churches and provide spiritual nourishment

Not everything in training is happy. Homesickness, doubts about abilities, even the choice of job - all these problems can arise. Chaplains are not magicians, and they may not be able to take problems away, but they listen and help Junior Soldiers think about what they're going to do, as well as advise them on how to go about it.  They don't take notes or write reports - what is said stays confidential. Chaplains are no strangers to awkward questions and they are available 24 hours a day.

Chaplains believe in God and want to encourage those who do likewise. There is a Church service at 1000 every Sunday, which is open to everyone. Church is compulsory for Junior Soldiers on the first Sunday only, as part of their education and formation. Additionally there is a mid-week Prayer Meeting every Wednesday at 2000 for those who wish to have themselves or others prayed for.

Faiths other than Christianity are catered for with a multi-faith prayer room. There are Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist and Sikh Padres to call upon for those who wish. For those who do not believe in God, the Chaplains are open to encouraging whatever the beliefs.

Chaplains are also involved in teaching lessons on the core values of the Army. Each lesson explores one of the core values, looks at what it involves, and what happens if soldiers lose it. The core values are fundamental throughout a military career. Chaplains will say they matter throughout our whole lives.
