Clearing snow at Frimley Park Hospital

The Brigade supports local authorities and emergency services during the conduct of UK operations. We participate in regular contingency planning and training with the regional Police, Ambulance and Fire and Rescue services to respond to emergency incidents within our AOR.

During January's heavy snowfall troops from the Royal Logistics Corps, based at Deepcut, cleared emergency access routes for ambulances at Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey and provided transport for critical staff at the hospital.

Twenty phase two trainee soldiers shovelled and brushed snow, in places 10-12" deep, aside allowing access for ambulances and emergency vehicles carrying injured and critical cases to the hospital's A & E Department.

In addition the Deepcut based troops have been providing 4x4 transport getting clinical surgical members of staff to and from the hospital.

At 8pm on Tuesday 5 January 2010 HQ 145 (South) Brigade received an emergency request from Hampshire Constabulary to provide assistance to 600 stranded motorists trapped by snow  on the A3 near Petersfield.

By midnight troops had deployed from 47 Regiment Royal Artillery based at Thorney Island to the southern end of the A3 near Clanfield and a party from 104 Battalion REME based at Bordon moved to assist police on the northern end of the blocked A3 near Longmoor.

Conditions were extremely challenging with heavy snow and freezing condition. Vehicles were abandoned and many motorists were struggling to reach safety.

The two teams worked through the night and rescued numerous individuals and took them to impromptu rest centres established nearby and gradually cleared a way through 4 miles of blocked traffic enabling emergency vehicles to establish a route through.

In the past we have been involved in such operations as Foot and Mouth and flooding. Our remit is large; where a civil authority requires military assistance we seek to provide.
