Napoleonic Wars

Redcoats Redcoats by Philip Haythornthwaite

Review by Col Patrick Crowley, PWRR

“SCUM of the earth” is how Wellington described the British soldier of the Napoleonic world. Philip Haythornthwaite, author of more than 40 books, mainly on this period of history, succeeds in telling the reader what the life of the Redcoat was like.

The title follows a logical and easy to follow sequence of; Army structure, recruiting, enlistment, equipment, everyday life, discipline, promotion, camp followers, on campaign, battle experience and homecoming.

Although only conservatively illustrated, real soldiers’ anecdotes bring this extremely well-researched text to life and make this a very readable and useful book for both the serious Napoleonic "spotter" and the generalist.
