212 Signal Squadron

212 Signal Squadron was formed from 12th Armoured Brigade Headquarters and Signal Squadron. The Troop titles honour 12 Brigade’s involvement in the WW2 Italian campaign.

Following the disbandment of the Brigade in 1995, the Squadron was reformed in Herford and alongside their sister Squadron 211 provided the Armoured Divisional Main Headquarters.

This role has since changed.


Current Role

212 Signal Squadron is now 212 Helmand ICS (Information Communication Services) Signal Squadron, part of a Campaign Signal Regiment.

The Squadron completed a successful tour of Afghanistan in 2009 – 2010 on Op HERRICK 10. The Helmand ICS Signal Squadron provides ICS into Helmand and wider CIS (Communications and Information Systems) across Afghanistan, supporting Headquarters from Brigade level down to Company Groups and Patrol Bases.

This covers a myriad of tasks across this diverse span of command from cable infrastructure, and staff support to rapid deployment of battle winning Mission Critical services.

Personnel in the Squadron have developed a strong ethos as ‘professional communicators’. 


Troop Roles and Equipment

Arezzo Troop
Arezzo troop is responsible for support to Task Force Helmand Headquarters in LashKar Gah.

The LashKar Gah ICS Troop have a multitude of tasks including maintaining satellite bearer systems, delivering Mission Critical services and helping develop the communications infrastructure across Afghanistan.


Monte Casino Troop

Monte Casino troop is the largest troop within the Squadron.

Its primary role is to support the communication systems for the Headquarters Joint Force Support and the Joint Force CIS element amongst others.

It is also the central hub for ICS teams deploying to the smaller detachments around Helmand. Monte Casino troop is made up of sections that specialize in a variety of skills from installation work to general maintenance and system engineering.


Rimini Troop

Rimini Troop is responsible for ICS deployments to the Forward Operating Bases and Patrol Bases.

Small teams of up to 5 personnel deliver services to company and patrol size locations around Helmand.

These teams are highly proficient across a number of disciplines and operate often under austere conditions and great pressure.
