211 Signal Squadron

Cormorant Vehicles

211 Signal Squadron was originally the 11th Armoured Brigade Headquarters and Signal Squadron in Minden, north Germany.

There it supplied the Brigade with the Headquarters, communications and the support needed to run a Brigade deployed in battle.

11th Armoured Brigade Headquarters and Signal Squadron disbanded in the early 1990's and 2 Squadron of 1 (UK) Armoured Division Signal Regiment adopted the name 211 Signal Squadron in honour of this.

At that time 2 Squadron’s role was to supply the Armoured Divisional Main Headquarters and it continued to do so, under the name 211 Signal Squadron, until 2009.

Current Role

In 2010 1 (UK) Armoured Division Signal Regiment became a Campaign Signal Regiment and 211 Signal Squadron is now the only Squadron specifically tasked with providing command support to the Divisional Headquarters.

To do this the Squadron is equipped with the Regiment’s complete AFV Bulldog and Cormorant fleets.

Troop Roles and Equipment

Bowman Troop

The largest of 211Signal Squadron’s troops, Bowman Troop’s Mission is to supply HQ 1st (UK) Armoured Division with the staff working environment and communications from which to control the modern battle field.

Commanded by a Lieutenant Troop Commander, Bowman Troop Equipped with a mixture of Bowman armoured and wheeled vehicles.

Using these it provides the Headquarters with data and voice Bowman communications.

Cormorant Troop

Cormorant Troop is the specialist Trunk Area Systems Troop for the Regiment.

It provides HQ 1 (UK) Armoured Division with a robust broadband wide area network for both data and telephony communications.

Additionally the Troop is tasked with exploiting Cormorant’s capability to its limits. This has included using the Tactical Network Gateway in order to allow Cormorant to be fully interoperable with Bowman.

This capability enables a Commander to speak directly to a soldier on the front line using Bowman on his Cormorant telephone – this helps the Division gain vital tactical information quickly.

Led by a Troop Commander, a Royal Signals Lieutenant, the troops contains roughly 40 soldiers who are mainly CS Operators with specialist Cormorant Training.  These soldiers maintain over 15 detachments, ensuring that the vehicles and equipment are fully deployable.

Support Troop

Support Troop is devoted to the provision of both technical and logistical support to 211 Signal Squadron.

Whether it is electricians providing power to communications installations, drivers for transport tasks or our engineers maintaining the equipment housed on the detachments, Support Troop will always be working alongside both Bowman and Cormorant Troop wherever they are deployed.

Commanding the Troop is a Lieutenant Troop Commander assisted by a Troop Staff Sergeant.
