246 Gurkha Signal Squadron
246 Gurkha Signal Squadron is one of the field squadrons under 2 Signal Regiment based in York. The Squadron comprises of three troops, namely Kowloon, Island and Sek Kong. Supporting these troops are the Squadron Headquarters, Technical workshop and Motor Transport Departments. Among the three troops, one has always been in some form of readiness to deploy overseas at short notice since Cormorant arrived in the Squadron.
The Squadron is fully equipped with the new Royal Signals state-of-the-art CORMORANT digital communications systems since 2004. 246 Squadron is one of the first to receive another new military satellite system, REACHER which replaces the Talon and Mitral. 246 GSS has completed Operation Tour in Iraq, Kosovo and Afghanistan recently and deployed on numerous major exercises in the UK and overseas. Despite being in high readiness tasks and facing the ever changing challenges, the squadron personnel actively takes part in all kinds of sporting and adventure training activities. Charity events has also been a huge success for the squadron in the past months and years supporting varieties of local and major charity organizations. Squadron is organising the annual Trailwalker event for 2009.
Majority of the personnel are married and accompanied. They enjoy the tight community life but are located at Fulford and Strensall. 'Bhet Ghat Club' is located in the camp which is utilised by the Gurkha community heavily during various social and cultural activities.
