Due to the restructuring of the Territorial Army (TA) 52 Signal Squadron (V) based in East Kilbride has now been renamed as 51 Signal Squadron (V) Troop and remains under the command of 32 Signal Regiment (V).

Sergeant Andy Tochel (36) is passionate about training. During the week he is a draftsman with Stuart McTaggart Engineers based in Glasgow, whilst at the weekends he is a Sergeant with the East Kilbride Signals.

As a Telecommunications Operator, Andy is used to working with new and state of the art communications equipment.

Once he has learnt the intricacies of a new piece of equipment, he is responsible for training the others within his Squadron, on how to use the new radio system. In addition to this, he is also a first aid instructor.

As Andy himself said, "The great thing about doing the Army First Aid Instructors Course, is that as well as being qualified to teach anyone in the Regular Army or the TA about first aid, you also qualify as a civilian First Aider. For some people, this means that they can earn extra money at work because they are a qualified First Aider within their company."

In addition to this, there are many other management, driving, accountancy and IT skills that are directly transferable from the TA to the civilian workplace. You can also get relevant civilian qualifications while you train.
