2 Signal Squadron (V)
Welcome to 2 (City of Dundee) Signal Squadron (Volunteers)
This Independent Signal Squadron of 7 officers and 105 soldiers is equipped with a variety of communications systems in order to provide an operational role. The Squadron has two key elements within its command:
Communications Troop. Provide the communicators and equipment to establish and maintain communications.
Support Troop. Provide the technical, mechanical and life support elements to enable the Sqn to deploy as a self-sufficient unit.
ROLE
The Squadron falls under the command of 2 (National Communications) Signal Brigade within which it conducts a specialised role of providing long range communications. Although the communications systems use a variety of equipment all operators are specialised in the role of long range High Frequency radio using various antennas and methods of propagation.
TRAINING
All new recruits on joining the squadron undergo an intense period of military training culminating in a course at one of the Army Training Regiments across the UK qualifying them as Royal Signals soldiers within the Territorial Army. These soldiers are then integrated into the Squadron and given background training in order for them to attend a trade course qualifying them to take their place in the Unit with a suitable trade. Trades available within the Unit include communications specialist, electronics technician, supply specialist, mechanic, chef, LGV driver and not forgetting all trades persons are first and foremost highly trained soldiers.
SQUADRON LIFE
Life in the Squadron can be as varied as your time allows with activities ranging from Skiing in the French Alps and Sailing in the Adriatic to tactical exercises across the UK and further. The ethic ´work hard, play hard´ is a principle the Squadron holds dear. Training within the unit takes place on Tuesday evenings between 7:30 & 9:30 and every other weekend for which personnel are paid the same daily rate of pay as their Regular Army counterparts. All training is geared towards a Squadron two-week deployment, known as Annual Camp, which qualifies personnel for a tax-free bounty (approx £1400 dependent on time served). 2008 Annual Camp will be in Warcop.
