241 Signal Squadron - Cable Laying

241 Signal Squadron is currently located in Corsham, Wiltshire.

The role of the Squadron is to provide very high readiness ICS cabling, installations and specialist expertise to UK, Expeditionary and Other Governmental Department (OGD) operations, in order to support the nominated commander(s).


Capabilities

241 Squadron is manned solely by Installation Technicians (equivalent to BT Engineers), as such, the capability of the Squadron is to provide infrastructure cabling on operations, during exercises and in various locations around the world. Recent deployments and tasks include:

  • Infrastructure cabling to Op HERRICK
  • Infrastructure cabling support to Permanent Joint Operating Bases (SAI, Cyprus and Gibraltar, as well as Brunei, Nepal and Diego Garcia)
  • Infrastructure cabling support to the Nuclear Accident Response
  • Organisation (NARO) and Mobile Access Units (MAU)
  • Delivery of infrastructure for temporary UK Ops HQs
  • Infrastructure cabling support to Exercises and formation level collective training

The squadron permanently maintains 30 days Notice To Move team for deployment to anywhere in the world.


Operational cycle and skill sets

The squadron operates on a 6 month operations cycle with one troop supporting surge teams to Op HERRICK, one troop supporting NARO/UK exercises and one troop on 30 days Notice To Move.

During support to operational deployments a surge team can expect to deploy for up to 8 weeks. 

With the continual deployment of surge teams, soldiers within the squadron must be flexible, resourceful, determined to succeed and have a firm grasp of the technicalities of their trade; they can often be tasked on site to design and install interim solutions to cabling infrastructure problems.
