What you can do

As Royal Signals communicators we ensure that formation level commanders and national government are provided with reliable long range communications using a wide range of sophisticated military and civilian digital, satellite and mobile communication systems using the latest computer and radio technology to meet the needs of the Army and the government.

We work both in barracks and in the field forming fast moving and versatile communications teams. During operations and exercises we may find ourselves working in a trench, in buildings, in tents or from the back of vehicles

All Royal Signals trades are physically demanding and the job must be carried out in all weather conditions and often without supervision

Its primary roles are to provide specialist long range radio and IT communications across countries and continents for the Armed Services and national government and to provide individual reinforcements to the Regular Army on peace-keeping and war-fighting operations anywhere in the world.

For example, in recent years the Regiment has provided specialist IT and communications support to national government and the emergency services as well as providing individual volunteers to support and work alongside their Regular counterparts on active service and operations in Cyprus, the Balkans, Iraq and Afghanistan.

We meet on Tuesday nights for training from 19:30hrs (7:30pm) to 21:30hrs (09:30pm). There is also one annual camp a year which is two weeks long, and a week's Deployment in May (Camp has to be attended if you are to qualify for the end of year bounty).

As a Royal Corps of Signals unit, the Squadron has a wide variety of trades available:

Communications Systems Operator - Operates communications equipment and is the primary trade, this involves the setting up and operation of radio equipment, printers, and encoded messages.

Communications Systems Engineer - For those a bit more technically minded. Maintains and repairs the radio equipment.

Electrician - Provides electrical power on Exercises/Operations and becomes a generator expert.

Supply Specialist - Technical Stores person providing expertise in the logistical chain, including re-supply in the field.

As with any organisation support by other organisations or Corps is essential:

Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) - Repairs and maintaining the Squadrons fleet of vehicles and equipment.

Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) - Providing medical assistance on the Exercise/Operations and teaching the Officers and Soldiers within the Squadron the basics of first aid.

Adjutant General Corps (AGC) - Clerks providing the HR administration for the Squadron.

Royal Logistic Corps (RLC) - Chefs catering for the Squadron on Exercise/Operations ensuring that the men and women of the Squadron get the right balance of calories and nutrients, also catering at Squadron socials.

Consider all the options, discuss with others and if there are any further questions that you feel that you need advice on, please contact the Squadron on 01382 457049 during working hours. So whoever you may be and whatever your qualifications, there is a good chance that we have a job for you.
