High Readiness Reserves (HRR)

We are a specialist TA unit that trains to support Civil Authorities in times of crisis.

What does 32 Signal Regiment do in support of the UK?

Recent years have seen us deployed in support of the Emergency Services and Civil Authorities, responding to:

  • The G8 summit in Gleneagles
  • Flooding in Carlisle
  • Foot & Mouth Disease
  • Industrial Action

In all the above we have acted in support of the Emergency Services and Local Authorities when specifically asked to do so. Our response to an incident within Scotland, Northern Ireland or northern England will depend on the nature of the emergency and the specific skills requested by the civil authorities.

This response may vary greatly and bring together troops from a variety of units. 32 Signal Regiment provides the means for these troops to communicate with each other and with the Emergency Services/Civil Authorities.

Uniquely, 32 Signal Regiment is the only military unit dedicated to providing Information Communications Services in support of UK Ops in northern Britain.

It is 90% manned by the Territorial Army with its National Communications Regiments supporting the Army's Regional Brigades throughout the UK. This means we have local soldiers supporting the local community - without them the Army would not be able to do its job in a crisis.

What is a High Readiness Reservist (HRR)?

A High Readiness Reservist is a TA soldier who has signed an additional agreement undertaking to be available within a given response time in support of UK Ops and UK Ops only.

For example, this means that a soldier based in Edinburgh can expect to be called out to support an operation at the Scottish Parliament or in support of Lothian and Borders Police.

What happens if they are called out?

With your employer's permission you will be mobilised and move straight to where your communications skills are required.  You will immediately establish communications back to the operations room in the TA Centre using deployable satellite gear or over existing telephone lines.

You will then set up the deployable IT systems for Army staff officers to use in the field, allowing them to effectively command and control other military assets on the ground.

You will be required to liaise with senior police officers, politicians and members of the Armed Forces in stressful and demanding situations. Ultimately you will be supporting your own local community in times of emergency and disaster.
