HQ RE 3 (UK) Div

The Divisional Engineer Group (DEG) is commanded by the Chief Royal Engineer (CRE), the principal engineer advisor to the Divisional Commander and is the officer responsible for training and preparing Engineer units for operations.

Headquarters Royal Engineers (HQRE), under command of the CRE, is responsible for providing engineer support to the Division with two Close Support Engineer Regiments (22 and 26 Engineer Regiments), a Light Role Regiment (38 Engineer Regiment) and a General Support Regiment (36 Engineer Regiment).

In addition the CRE has direct operational command over two Field Support Squadrons (70 and 15 Field Support Squadrons), who are responsible for providing Engineer logistic support to the Division.

There are six staff officers within HQRE.  The staff are supported by a clerical team of four and a Geographic Support Cell that provide mapping and geographic advice to the divisional staff.

In peacetime, HQRE is responsible for ensuring that all engineer units are adequately trained, equipped and prepared for operations.  During a large scale war fighting operation, HQRE would deploy within the divisional structure, to ensure that engineer support is optimised across the Division.

In times of war the CRE becomes the Joint Force Engineer, and his staff are augmented with specialist RE staff officers from disciplines such as Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), Infrastructure (Infra) and Geographic (GEO).
