The role of 42 Engineer Regiment (Geographic) is to provide field deployable geographic support to Defence. This support is provided by the use of specially trained geographic staff embedded within major Army Headquarters and by the deployment of specialist teams on operations.

Training

All Royal Engineer geographic specialists are trained at the Royal School of Military Survey, based alongside the Regiment at Hermitage in Berkshire. Officers attend the Army Survey Course and, if successful, are awarded a Master of Science degree in Defence Geographic Information. Soldiers undertake basic training and combat engineer training along with the rest of the Corps before completing Geographic specialist training.

Deployments

Each of the UK Divisions and Brigades has geographic specialists embedded within the staff. This means that Military Engineers (Geographic) have deployed on all recent operations such as those in Iraq and Afghanistan. When the requirement for geographic advice exceeds that which the Geographic specialist staff can perform, a Geographic Support Group (GSG) is deployed. The size of the GSG will vary according to the requirement.
