22 Engineer Regiment
3 Armoured Engineer Squadron stand by the completed Barker Bridge, Cumbria. The Logistic Support Bridge was built by the squadron after the original bridge was damaged by floods in December 2009.
Based at Swinton Barracks in Perham Down, near Tidworth, 22 Engineer Regiment provides Engineer Close Support to 1 Mechanized Brigade.
The Regiment consists of the following units:
- 6 Headquarters and Support Squadron.
- 3 Armoured Engineer Squadron.
- 5 Armoured Engineer Squadron.
- 52 Armoured Engineer Squadron.
- REME Light Aid Detachment.
Capabilities
Each Armoured Engineer Squadron provides close engineer support with Titan and Trojan Armoured Engineer vehicles and Combat Engineer sections. More specialised capabilities are held in the Headquarters and Support Squadron, such as Reconnaissance, Design and Survey, Diving and Automotive Bridge Launching Equipment for the General Support Bridge.
Deployments
The Regiment currently has two squadrons (5 AES and 52 AES) deployed on Op HERRICK in support of 16 Air Assault Brigade. There are also personnel deployed on Op TOSCA. Prior to this it deployed on Op TELIC 10 and TELIC 4, providing engineer support not only to its brigade but also to other coalition troops. This included force protection in Basra Palace, camp infrastructure in Baghdad and many other tasks. More recently the Regiment has deployed squadrons to Gibraltar on ceremonial duties, to Kenya and Belize for trade training and construction tasks, and Canada for collective training in the Armoured and Counter Insurgency roles.
Sport and Adventure Training
The Regiment conducts regular adventurous training expeditions, deploying personnel as far as South Africa and Iceland. Closer to home, popular activities have included alpine skiing in France and offshore sailing in the English Channel.
The Regiment has been represented at many sporting events during this training year, including the RE Games, RE Half Marathon, 4 Division Athletics and Army Bouldering Championships.
MACC (Military Aid to the Civil Community)

Ground preparation for the Barker Bridge, Cumbria
Squadrons have conducted numerous MACC construction tasks including the recent construction of the Barker Bridge Crossing at Workington in Cumbria following widespread flooding.
Other tasks in recent years have included the construction of bridges and a jetty for remote communities in Scotland, building a disabled walkway and viewing area at a wildlife park,and improving access to a holiday lodge used by Service families.
