The Queen's Gurkha Engineers

Gurkhas were first enlisted into the Corps of Royal Engineers in September 1948 when a Gurkha Training Squadron RE was formed at Kluang, Malaya. 67 Field Squadron RE was raised in 1949, 68 Field Squadron RE in 1950 and the RHQ of 50 Field Regiment RE followed in 1951. The Regiment later became part of the Brigade of Gurkhas and ‘The Gurkha Engineers’ on 28th September; it is this date which we now celebrate as the Regimental Birthday.

The title ‘The Queen’s Gurkha Engineers’ was bestowed by Her Majesty The Queen on 21st April 1977.  Shortly afterwards in 1981 the newly re-established 69 Gurkha Field Squadron moved to Kitchener Barracks, to be deployed to the Falklands the following year.  69 Gurkha Field Squadron moved to Invicta Park Barracks in 1994, and 70 Gurkha Field Support Squadron reformed in 2000 where they both remain today. For Afghanistan both Squadrons re-roled to Search and have recently adjusted to become Force Support Field Squadrons.

Since those early days, the Regiment has witnessed and been part of many changes.  After so many years in South East Asia as part of the Hong Kong Garrison and on operations in Malaya and Borneo, The QGE remain settled in Invicta Park and is fully integrated into life in 36 Engineer Regiment and the town of Maidstone. The close integration with the Corps of Royal Engineers allows The QGE to play a full part in Army life including deployed operations.

The strength and energy of The QGE remains strong and enjoys great and ever growing respect; all members of The QGE must take pride in their outstanding achievements.  The Regiment fondly and eternally remembers our fallen QGE brothers.  There is much optimism - the fighting spirit of the Gurkha soldier and professionalism of the Gurkha Sapper remains in both high regard and demand.
