72 Engineer Regiment

72 (Tyne Electrical Engineers) Engineer Regiment reformed in 2006 as a Close Support Royal TA (now Army Reserve) Engineer Regiment.

The Regiment is formed into 2 Squadrons; 103 Field Squadron based in Newcastle and Sunderland, 106 Field Squadron based in Sheffield and Bradford.

Close Support Engineers provide specialist engineer capability to front line troops including such tasks as Demolitions, Bridging, Construction, Water Supply, Field Engineering and Counter Mobility.


History

1967

72 (Tyne Electrical Engineers) Engineer Regiment formed in TAVR II with HQ at Gateshead from TA (now Army Reserve) Engineer Units in Northumberland, Durham and Yorkshire.
HQ Squadron at Gateshead, successor to 50th Northumbrian Division RE. 
103 (1st Newcastle) Field Squadron at Newcastle, successor to 50th Northumbrian Division RE. 
105 (Durham) Plant Squadron at Gateshead, successor to 105 Construction Regiment RE and128Corps Engineer Squadron RE
118 (Tees) Field Squadron at Middlesbrough, successor to 118 Corps Engineer Regiment RE.
129 (East Riding) Field Squadron at Hull, successor to 129 Construction Regiment RE; absorbed 1 Jan 1969 part of P Battery, The Humber Regiment RA.

1971

105 Squadron redesignated 105 (Tyne Electrical Engineers) Squadron.

1975

105 Squadron became independent.

1977

129 Squadron transferred to 73 Engineer Regiment; 106 (West Riding) Field Squadron at Sheffield transferred from 75 Engineer Regiment.

1992

106 Squadron transferred to 73 Engineer Regiment.

1993

Headquarters Squadron redesignated 233 Headquarters Squadron and 105 Squadron regimented from independent status.

1999

Regiment disbanded and reduced to 72 Field Squadron, 71 Engineer Regiment.

2006

72 (Tyne Electrical Engineers) Engineer Regiment  re-formed with RHQ at Gateshead
103 (1st Newcastle) Field Squadron at Newcastle, to transfer from 71 Engineer Regiment in April 08
106 (West Riding) Field Squadron at Sheffield with a Troop at Bradford, to transfer from 73 Engineer Regiment in April 2007
299 Parachute Squadron at Wakefield with detachments at Hull and Pontefract, formed by conversion of Wakefield detachment of Minden (LI) Company from East and West Riding Regiment and members of 131 Independent Commando Squadron Royal Engineers.
