Combat Engineer

Combat Engineer training gives you all the skills you need out in the field.

Whatever trade you choose, all Royal Engineers soldiers will train as a Combat Engineer first. Combat Engineering is key to the Corps and training everyone in all military engineering disciplines increases flexibility and variety.

Combat Engineer training consists of a nine-week course undertaken at the Royal School of Military Engineering and will give you an all-round education in military engineering and construction skills.

These skills include bridge-building, general construction, demolitions using explosives, provision of clean water, use of hand and power tools, operation of boats, basic bomb disposal and construction of field defences.

As Combat Engineers, Sappers apply their engineering skills and knowledge to battlefield situations and during this course you will acquire the military engineering skills to fulfil your primary role on operations. Those who progress to the Advanced Combat Engineer's course have the opportunity to develop their military engineering skills further and take a more supervisory role.

Job Notes

Sergeant Carlos Malaspina (Territorial)
Combat Engineer

"My main reason for joining the Territorials was travel and the training. The training has really helped me build my confidence in my day job as an area manager for a bank. Recently I had to make a presentation in front of 700 people at the NEC, and without that confidence, I wouldn't have been able to do it."
