Helping the Army to Move Fight and Survive

Helping the Army to Move (Mobility)

Royal Engineers specialised armoured, amphibious and plant machines provide mobility support to the combat and support arms of the Army. Bridging equipment, fascines, trackway and earthmoving equipment provide gap crossing capabilities and assist in overcoming obstacles, such as debris and ditches. Armoured Engineers can even fire an explosive hose called Python to clear a safe lane through a minefield.

Helping the Army to Fight (Counter Mobility)

The Royal Engineers help prevent the enemy from moving by using their engineering equipment to lay minefields, dig anti-tank ditches and create obstacles.

Helping the Army to Live (Survivability)

The Royal Engineers main Combat Survivability roles are water supply and purification, field defences and force protection measures.

The Royal Engineers construct camps such as those that protect forces in Afghanistan and Iraq and provide Infrastructure support such as fuel and power. Specialist Engineers from 521 Specialist Team Royal Engineers (Water Development) (521 STRE (WD)) based in Chillwell, Nottingham provide well drilling expertise to ensure that the Army is never short of a supply of water.
