RE Officer
RE OFFICER - Leadership challenges for the technically minded.
If you've got an aptitude for leadership, then joining the Royal Engineers and becoming an officer is a great way to take things to the next level.
The Job
As a Troop Commander you will command approximately 30 soldiers, numerous vehicles and a few million pounds worth of specialist engineer tools and equipment, using these to their best effect to help the military move, fight and survive. There are a number of different types of Troops you could find yourself commanding including Armoured, Mechanised, Air Support, EOD, Parachute, Commando, Gurkha or Amphibious trained troops to name just a few.
You are highly likely to command your Troop on operations in some of the most arduous and demanding conditions. The responsibility is high, but so are the rewards. Whether on operations, on exercise or in barracks you will be actively involved in your soldiers welfare, training and career development. You will also have opportunities to play sport, organise and lead overseas expeditions and deploy on exercises.
The Right Job For Me?
All officer jobs will call on your ability to lead and motivate the troops under your command, and you will need the maturity and sense of responsibility necessary for a role in which soldiers' wellbeing can depend on the outcome of your decisions. As part of a larger unit an ability to take orders is essential, but you must also be able to act on your own initiative if the situation calls for it. The Royal Engineers require young officers with sound judgement, initiative and the ability to motivate and inspire their soldiers. If you have what it takes and have an appetite for action and adventure then one of the best jobs in the Army could be yours.
What Skills Will I Learn?
Officers are expected to master the same basic military skills and tactics as the soldiers they command. This will include drill, basic field craft, map reading, first aid and how to fire and maintain your personal weapon. You will also learn how to command soldiers in the field and in barracks through a series of field exercises. In addition to your soldiering skills you will also learn the skills pertinent to being an officer in the Royal Engineers, which includes learning Engineer reconnaissance, demolitions, and bridging to name just a few.
You will learn how to take on the role of project manager, responsible for the overall running of the construction site where you are working, and to manage the inspection and maintenance of vehicles and equipment. You will also oversee the welfare and career development of your soldiers.
The Royal Engineers has units in a range of specialist roles including parachute, commando, diving, Gurkha, and bomb disposal. If you intend to join a troop which has one of these roles, you will complete the necessary courses.
Although an engineering or technical degree is not required to join the Corps, if you do have an engineering degree or technical background there are opportunities as your career progresses to further your qualifications and either gain Chartered Engineer status or qualify as a Chartered Surveyor.
