165 Port and Maritime Regiment (Volunteers)
Unique within the Territorial Army, 165 Port and Maritime Regt RLC(V) is based at Grantham in Lincolnshire but does much of its training at Marchwood Military Port in Southampton. We also have a troop based on the Isle of Wight. Our role is to support our Regular Army counterparts, 17 Port and Maritime Regiment RLC, with whom we have close links.
Life is never dull in our unit. We train as Port Operators in order to load and unload ships of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary that carry stores and equipment for British Forces on operations overseas.
We also train as Seaman and Marine Engineers in order to pilot and maintain our fleet of inshore vessels such as Landing Ships (Logistics) and Mexeflote powered rafts. We specialise in unloading ships and getting stores ashore where no established port exists.
Working within our unit it is possible to gain seamanship qualifications as well as licences to drive and operate cranes and other mechanical handling equipment. Travel abroad is also likely whenever the operational need arises or when major exercises take place.
165 Port and Maritime Regiment was one of the first Territorial Army units to deploy during the Iraq Conflict. Elements of the Regiment deployed first to Cyprus and then onward to Umm Qasr in Iraq where we served with distinction in getting stores and equipment ashore and forward to where it was needed.
