76 General Support Squadron
The first allocation of the 76 Squadron/Company number in March 1903 to a Horse Transport Company of the Army Service Corps (ASC), formed at Stobs near Harwick Scotland.
This brief Existence ended in November 1904. The number then lay dormant until 1909 when it was given to a Motor Transport (MT) Company based in Chatham, Kent. Under a 1912 re-organisation of the ASC, the Company was renamed as 65 (MT) Company ASC.
It took the outbreak of the First World War to see the next use of the 76 prefix, with the formation of 76 (MT) Company ASC on the 14th September 1914. The allocated role for this incarnation of 76 (MT) Company was at 3 Calvary Division Ammunition Sub Park.
The Company embarked for France on the 6th November 1914 to support the British Expeditionary Force (BEF). It continued to become a reverse MT Company for 7 GHQ. Following the end of the war, the company disbanded on the 23rd April 1919.
It is assumed that the number 76 lay unused during the inter-war years until 1939, when it deployed to France with the BEF at the outbreak of the Second World War. Following Dunkirk, the unit was allocated the role of
Division Troop Company for 52 (Lowland) Divisions. The Company remained in Germany as part of the occupation force until 1st September 1950. There is some information to suggest that a year later a RASC Company with the 76 prefix was serving in Japan as part of the occupation force. In 1957 the prefix took to the seas once more when the number was allocated to 76 Company (Landing Tank Craft) of the RASC.
A gap then ensued until 1985 when the prefix was allocated the Headquarters Squadron of 4 Armoured Division and Transport Regiment (ADTR), based in Minden. The next major event was the outbreak of the Gulf War when shortage of regular transport units caused the Squadron to be re-roled into a General Transport Squadron.
The unit was finally disbanded as part of 4 ADTR in 1993 on the formation of the Royal Logistic Corps (RLC). The prefix was allocated to a shadow Brigade Support Squadron in 2 Close Support Regiment.
A boost of 3000 personnel to the army's manpower provided Executive Committee of the Army board the opportunity to fully man another Brigade Support Squadron to support 1 (UK) Armoured Division. 76 Brigade Support Squadron became active again on 5th April 1995.
Since the Squadron's reformation, it has undertaken a variety of operational tours in the Balkans and returned to the Gulf for Operation TELIC from February to July 2003. 2 Close Support Regiment was re-roled into 2 Logistic Support Regiment on 1st April 2005, and deployed on Operation TELIC 7 from November 05 to May 06. The Sqn's last deployment was on Operation TELIC 12 from May - December 08.
