22 Close Support Squadron

22 CS Sqn

22 Close Support Sqn history dates back to when it was fromed as a Company to participate in Campaigns in Somaliland in 1903 and then in France during World War 1, 1914-1918. Here we became the Divisional Company Horse Transport to 3 Division (3 DSC).

The Company returned to France in World War 2, as part of the British Expeditionary Force, and was present at the beaches of Dunkirk when it was evacuated before the German occupation of France. On 18th June 1944 the Company returned to France, landing in Normandy, then it went on to see more of Europe including Belgium, Holland and Germany with the retreat of the German Army at the close of the War.

In 1945 the Company was renamed 22 Coy, Royal Army Service Corps (RASC) and was based after the war at Neumunster (Schleswig Holstein), Germany as part of the occupation forces until 1948.

It was then disbanded in order to be reformed in the UK, however upon relocation the Company was placed into suspended animation.  In August 1950, 594 Company was renumbered to 22 Company and based at Taunton where it remained until 1958 when it again was disbanded.

On 1st September 1960 the Company was again reformed, this time it was renamed 22 Company RASC (Air Defence) and was based at Watchfield near Swindon, Wiltshire. Here they remained until June 1965 when it was renamed to 22 Squadron, Royal Corps of Transport and was moved to Wilton, Old Sarum. Here they remained until 1985 when it changed 222 Sqn RCT and relocated to Bulford.

In 1993 222 Sqn RCT was reverted back to 22 Transport Squadron  RCT and in the same year disbanded. On 3 April 2002 the Squadron was reformed as 22 Transport Squadron, Royal Logistic Corps, The Squadron became part of 1 General Support Regiment and moved to the Regiments new home of Princess Royal Barracks, based back in Germany in the old RAF station in Gutersloh.

Throughout this time the Squadron was busy with elements of the Squadron being deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan and Northern Ireland. This continued up until Aug 2004 when the Squadron was re-roled as 22 Close Support Squadron RLC. Also in 2005 the Squadron moved allegiences from 1 GS Regt to 2 Logistic Support Regiment.

Currently the Squadron has returned from Operations with elements of the Squadron going to both Afghanistan and Iraq. The future for the Squadron at present is to carry out Ceremonial Duties guarding the Royal Family and future operations and exercises as per normal for such a busy Squadron.
