Soldier profile
Private Matt 'Pimmy' Pimblett is working as an RLC driver in Afghanistan. Based at Camp Bastion, he works with 254 Medical Regiment, driving the Mastiff armoured ambulance vehicle on combat logistic patrols all over Helmand and Kandahar provinces.
The patrols are vital to the troops in the Forward Operating Bases (FOBs). "We supply them with food, ammo, medical kit, and post - so it's a very important job", says Pte Pimblett.
They're not called combat logistic patrols for nothing. Driving in Afghanistan is never dull. They have to contend with everything from small arms fire to improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Pte Pimblett continues: "We've had rocket-propelled grenades fired at us, found IEDs, and assisted with the extraction of dead Afghan soldiers. It's an eye-opener to the realities of war and the effects it can have on people's lives."
"Nevertheless, I like getting stuck into the work and although it may seem strange to people back home, I quite like the danger, as I love the adrenaline rush!"
Pte Pimblett, who finishes his tour in April, says he has enjoyed his time in the Army so far: "It's a guaranteed career and wage. I love the camaraderie and knowing that I've done my bit for Queen and country. I'd recommend the Army as an excellent opportunity for people want to do something worthwhile."
