REME TA
The Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) are supported by the Territorial Army (TA).
REME TA Officers and Soldiers partake in similar training and train to join similar trade groups and when they deploy overseas on Operations are fully integrated with Regular REME soldiers.
There are some obvious differences; REME TA is a part-time commitment. Dependant on your day to day job you can decide to commit to either 27 days (Called Regional TA) or 19 days (Called National TA).
When you attend training camps, weekends and evenings you receive the same pay as your Regular counter part.
National and Regional Recruited REME TA
Nationally Recruited TA soldiers have a lower commitment of 19 days per year and are recruited from across the entire Country. To qualify for the lower commitment you need to have vocational skills that are transferable, i.e. work as a mechanic or currently at college on a engineering course, or have relevant previous military experience.
Regional Recruited TA soldiers have a higher commitment of 27 days per year and are recruited from their 'region', i.e. local TA centre. The extra 8 days enable the Army to provide the extra training that will be required to qualify you at trade, e.g. recovery mechanic training.
REME TA Battalions
Like the Regular REME Battalions, a TA Battalion is made up of predominantly REME Officers and Soldiers; they also contain all the various trades that REME TA have to offer.
The TA Battalion is divided up into sections called Companies but unlike the Regular REME Battalions, a TA Company is not in the same place as their other Companies. This makes it easier to travel to.
Currently REME TA have 4 TA Battalions with Companies spread over the UK.
REME TA Units
Like the Regular REME units, REME TA are also attached to every TA Regiment and form a small workshop. This is called a Light Aid Detachment (LAD).
From here, REME soldiers can maintain and repair the units equipment where and when it brakes down. If the repair is too large and complex they can ask the REME Battalion to carry out the repairs.
There are numerous REME TA units around the UK.
