Downtime
There is equipment provided in theatre for those moments when soldiers get some 'downtime'.
Internet connection is also available in the bigger military bases, and are quickly expanding to the smaller locations to enable troops to keep in touch and also shop for small personal items they may have forgotten. A number of camps also have WiFi installed, to enable troops to hook up to the Web with their laptops.
Some equipment includes televisions, DVD players and gaming machines. The British Forces Broadcasting Service (BFBS) offers live TV broadcasting, providing the operational situation allows. There are also radios available, capable of receiving BBC World Service or BFBS radio.
Newspapers, monthly magazines, books and board games are also available.
Leisure facilities
Troops are able to maintain their fitness and most have access to some fitness equipment. The bigger bases hold well-equipped gyms, with weights, cardio machines and mat areas whilst the smaller locations may have a handful of free-weights and some pull-up bars.
In the Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) the soldiers have built gyms themselves and made use of natural materials found on-site.
Live entertainment
Live entertainment is a big boost to morale on tour and this is often in the form of the Combined Services Entertainment (CSE) shows and personality visits. Both are very popular and really help soldiers to have a laugh with their mates and de-stress.
The shows often involve singers, dancers and comedians and CSE works hard to bring regular groups out on tour. The live entertainment generally takes place at the main operating bases.
