Corporal Russ Nolan
My name is Corporal Russ Nolan. I'm 31 and I work at Media and Comm at Headquarters Land Forces as an Army photographer.
Originally I was a hobby photographer and, reading of the magazines I used to buy, it profiled an Army photographer and how he goes about his work, which I thought was very interesting and then looked into getting into it myself, and after passing the relevant courses, I now do the same job as he does.
My job involves taking pictures of the Army, so basically we go wherever the Army are training, wherever we think it will have a news interest.
My favourite job in 2008 was at the very beginning of the year. I got to go to the south of France to photograph the Army Ski Championships, which was excellent, you get some great action pictures.
Also in 2008 I deployed as part of the Combat Camera Team to Afghanistan on Op HERRICK. While I was on the MER helicopter and I had the opportunity to both film and take pictures, so I tried to portray what the medical staff do and how they operate whilst in the air and on the ground.
Some of the other highlights of the year is I got the photograph Prince Charles as he visited troops training at Copehill Down. I also got to go onto the Unit Operational Requirement demo. There I managed to get a photograph of a guy with a sniper rifle, which I then used and manipulated slightly for the Digital Category of the Army Competition, which came 2nd.
And also I managed to get to some of the Brigade boxing tournaments that were going on, which one of the bouts was a female bout which was, surprisingly, a lot more vicious than any of the male bouts that went before them!
Photography for me is an interest both as a hobby and at work.
During my own time I do like to go out and do a lot of wildlife photography and landscape photography.
