Coldstreamers' Regimental Band battles for Album of The Year 25 February 2010

Just as the Coldstream Guards are fighting the battle out in Helmand Province, their regimental band’s classical album Heroes is about to take on its own battle in the Classical music arena.

It’s Classical Brit Awards time again and this year the Regimental Band of the Coldstream Guards hopes to emulate the success of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards - who came top of the poll last year - with Heroes.

The album, which features popular classics spanning the traditions and cultures of the military and the movies, has been one of the most popular classical albums since its launch in November 2009. Therefore, the regiment has high hopes.

Winning this prestigious musical accolade - NS&I Album of the Year - really would make the Guardsmen’s return from a gruelling six-month Helmand tour in April a homecoming to remember.

The Classical Brit Awards are voted for by the public through online voting at their website. You can vote now by following the link in the right-hand panel. Voting ends on 23 April with the winner being announced at an award ceremony in May.

The band, the oldest of its kind in the world, was signed to Universal Music in June 2009 and is best known for performing the theme tune to Dad’s Army. It’s also the country’s oldest-serving military band with a 224-year history, as well as being the oldest continual surviving recording artists in the world.
