Repatriation of Corporal James Oakland

The repatriation of Corporal James Oakland (26) of the Royal Military Police took place at RAF Lyneham in North Wiltshire today, 29 October 2009.

Following the repatriation ceremony Cpl Oakland's cortege moved through the market town of Wootton Bassett, where it was observed by hundreds of townsfolk, veterans and soldiers.

Cpl Oakland died after being mortally wounded by an improvised explosive device on a foot patrol in the Gereshk region of Helmand province. He was conducting a route search to clear devices to allow the Battle Group freedom of movement.

He is survived by his parents Steve and Christine and a brother, Daniel, who is in his final term at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst.

Cpl Oakland had a long-term girlfriend, Lauren Bowyer, whom he loved dearly and enjoyed travelling the world with. He was very close to his family who are from New Moston in Manchester.
