Major K F N Roberts

Major Kevin Roberts was educated at Queen Elizabeth School Manchester, London College of Music and Media and the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall (RMSM). In 1990 he was selected to attend the three year Bandmaster Course at Kneller Hall and qualified in 1993 achieving top student and receiving seven awards including Professors' Prize for Performance, Director's Prize for Conducting, Sommerville Prize for Orchestration and the Barsotti Award for Best British Student Bandmaster.
His first appointment, Bandmaster 1 RTR, came in 1994 and later that year he took over as Bandmaster of the newly formed Cambrai Band. In 1997 he was appointed Bandmaster, Band of the Irish Guards, from where he was selected, 18 months later, for the staff post of School Bandmaster RMSM. After completing his Advanced Certificate in Music (psm) he was commissioned into the Corps of Army Music and subsequently appointed Director of Music, Normandy Band of the Queen's Division. In 2003 he commanded his unit on operational deployment to Iraq; working with 34 Field Hospital. On return, he was chosen to join the staff of the Defence Force School of Music, Australia – undertaking a study of the Australian Army Band Corps. He was appointed Director of Music, Band of the Army Air Corps in 2006 and in the following year promoted to the rank of Major and selected for the appointment of Chief Instructor RMSM where he was responsible for the delivery of all musical training for Army music. In January 2010 he had the honour to be appointed Director of Music, Band of the Grenadier Guards.
Outside of the Armed Forces he has worked as a Lecturer at Surrey University and performed as musical director and adjudicator for numerous organisations and events. Additional interests include swimming, cycling, rowing and painting.
Major Roberts has been awarded the post-graduate degree of Master of Music, is the recipient of the Cassell's Medal from The Worshipful Company of Musicians and is an elected Freeman of the City of London.
Bandmaster
Warrant Officer Class One Chris King began his military career at the Guards' Depot, Pirbright in 1987 where he did his basic training. He later moved up the road to the Army Junior School of Music at Pirbright for 15 months of musical and military tuition. He was presented the Musician of the Year award at the end of this course in Dec1988.
In Jan 1989, he attended the year long Pupils' Course at RMSM Kneller Hall. At the end of this course, he won the Cassels Bronze Medal, a Cousins parchment (they were worth more then!) and the Frank Wright Cornet Silver Medal.
In Jan 1990, he was posted to the Royal Artillery Band in Woolwich, London where he served on the trumpet and viola.
After the completion of the BSC and Drum Majors' Course, was posted to RMSM as a Foundation Course Supervisor in Oct 1998. He served in this position for a year before beginning the BM Course in Sep 1999.
After graduating from the BM Course with a1st Class BMus (Hons), he was posted into the appointment of Bandmaster of the Queen's Division Minden Band.
After a successful tour with the Minden Band, he was posted in February in 2006 to Headquarters DCAMUS as the Training & Development Warrant Officer.
In 2008 he took up his present post as Bandmaster of the Grenadier Guards Band. Chris is a very keen Brass Band Conductor and cornet player and was a key player in the creation the British Army Brass Band. He also conducts a number of civilian Brass Bands in national competitions across the UK.
