Marty Wilde

Marty Wilde, Cy Payne and the Band of the Irish Guards

In April, the 1960s Rock 'n' Roll icon Marty Wilde visited the band to fulfill his dream of hearing one of his big hits performed by a military band.  'Abergavenny' was arranged for the band by Cy Payne, a musical director, composer and arranger who first worked with Marty some fifty years ago on the live Saturday night version of the 'Oh Boy Show'.  Through his friendship with Major Philip Shannon, the Director of Music of the band, Cy was able to score his arrangement and accompany Marty to Wellington Barracks to hear it played. Having heard the arrangement, Marty was given the chance to achieve his ambition by being asked to join the band in a performance of the song.
