Based permanently at Wellington Barracks in London, the primary role is to support State and ceremonial events.
They can regularly be seen at the world famous ceremony of Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace, as well as at other national occasions. In addition, the Band enjoys diverse performance opportunities at home and abroad, such as performing regularly with the Royal Philharmonic and Halle Orchestras in some of the most spectacular extravaganzas staged in the UK.
Appearances on the BBC's 'Songs of Praise' and at prestigious sporting events such as the Ashes, the FA Cup Final, Royal Ascot, Wimbledon and The Prix de L'Arc de Triumph horse race in Paris have taken the Band's music to a worldwide audience and has afforded them the opportunity to share the stage with celebrities such as Katherine Jenkins, Bryn Terfel and Shirley Bassey.
As well as a very good marching band and concert band capability it has a number of smaller ensembles available.
- Dance band - The Welsh Guards dance band can range from a jazz trio to a six-piece function band. The latter comprises of a rhythm section, piano, bass, saxophonist and a male and female vocalist. The band is in high demand for a variety of popular musical engagements, ranging from Banjaluca, Bosnia to diplomatic receptions at Buckingham Palace. The Band has an extensive repertoire from cool melodic jazz, hits of the 70's and 80's, to present day chart toppers.
- Fanfare trumpets - With their splendid uniforms and stately bearing, the fanfare trumpeters of the Welsh Guards add that extra touch of pomp and ceremony to an occasion. They regularly play in St. Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and the Royal Albert Hall as well as other prestigious venues, and have shared the stage with some of the world's finest orchestras. Depending on the occasion, they perform as a team of two players up to the full ensemble of nine.
- Salon orchestra - The primary role of the salon orchestra is to provide background music for events such as Investitures at Buckingham Palace and other State occasions. It also plays for City of London dinners and corporate functions throughout the capital. The instrumentation of the orchestra is usually 3x violins, viola, cello, double bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, french horn, trumpet and piano. Depending on the occasion, this instrumental line-up is flexible and can be altered to accommodate a particular request.
- Brass quintet - this is the most popular ensemble of the Band and regularly performs both at home and abroad at regimental dinners, weddings, banquets and at corporate events. The quintet features some of the finest brass players in the Guards Division.
