The two bands are a fundamental part of ceremonial parades in London and beyond. They often perform as a combined unit, the best example is on 'Trooping The Colour'. The two drum horses carry very special kettle drums, which control not only the speed of the music but also many of the drill commands normally directed from the front by a Drum Major or by baton drill.
The musicians within the mounted bands all have to pass the mounted dutymans course. This is a 6 month course covering all the skills required to not only ride a ceremonial horse but also look after the amazing uniforms associated with both the Regiments.
Currently one band is located at Windsor and the other at Knightsbridge.
The two bands also perform as standard military marching bands, concerts bands and have an array of other talented ensembles to call upon as required.
