64 Squadron

64 Sqn, based in Lancashire House, Chorley, is one of the Reserve Medical Support Squadrons for 3 Medical Regiment.  It was formed in 2001 and has been involved in a number of military Operations and Exercises across the globe.

The Chorley Detachment was formed in April 2001 at Lancaster House Chorley, as a detachment of Evacuation Squadron, 5 General Support Medical Regiment with an establishment of 50 officers and soldiers. The building was reopened after extensive renovations by the Mayor of Chorley, Mr Tom McGowan, in a ceremony attended the MP for Chorley, the Honourable Lindsay Hoyle MP, councillors and local dignitaries. Lancaster House known locally as ‘The Barracks’ has been home to a variety of Territorial Units since 1896, including The Chorley Pals.

Afforded Squadron Status in 2006 to become C (64 Chorley) Medical Squadron (Volunteers), the established strength rose to 150 while the actual strength remains around 50. The Squadron was again renamed in 2010 to become D (64) Medical Squadron (Volunteers). The Squadron re-titled again on 1st March 2014 to 64 Medical Squadron and was re-subordinated to 3 Medical Regiment - as part of an Adaptable Force Regiment. The latest establishment authorises manning of 87 Officers and Soldiers.

Since its conception in 2001, the Squadron has deployed 40 officers and soldiers to Bosnia, Cyprus, Iraq and Afghanistan on OP OCULUS, OP TOSCA, OP PALATINE, OP TELIC 1, 5 and 8, as well as OP HERRICK 7, 13, 14, 15 and 18.
