Territorials

The Territorial Army is a growing organisation with a wide range of opportunities.  Whatever your skills, wherever you live in the UK and dependent on your desired level of commitment there is likely to be the right option available for you.

There's a role for you in the Territorial Army

From infantry soldier to medic, there is a wide range of roles on offer. And becoming a Territorial is a great way to use your existing skills and develop some exciting new ones.

Officers and Soldiers

A key decision when deciding to join the Territorials will be whether to join as a soldier or officer. There are about 30 soldiers serving in the Territorials for every officer so both options are possible. Officers are selected for their leadership qualities and are assessed on their intellect, charisma and competence.  Soldiers are selected too and have a more practical role.  The Army will help you decide which option is right for you.

Regional or National?

Most of the Territorials is organised into Regional Units which train an evening a week and at weekends.  Attendance is voluntary, but you must complete 27 days training to qualify for a tax free financial bounty each year.  There are also National Territorial Units, often formed around medical and engineering specialist skills, they train at weekends and must complete a minimum of 19 days training in a year.  Enquire about both options.

Professionally qualified?

If you already have or would like to gain specialist skills in areas then you should enquire about the opportunities to become a Professionally Qualified Officer.  Taking account of your specialist skills in areas such as medicine, law and engineering; your military training package to join the Territorials might well be different; with your civilian qualifications being put to good use and enhanced by the experience.

Going to university?

If you're a full time university student, you can either join a Regional or National Territorial unit or consider joining the Officers’ Training Corps (OTC).  OTC is part of the Territorials and it's purpose is to develop the leadership potential of selected university students, raising awareness of the Army and building interest in it’s career opportunities - whether you decide to join the Army or as future leaders in your chosen profession.
