Training

The aim of training is to give soldiers the skills they need to do their jobs. This includes the military know how that every soldier learns plus the skills needed for their chosen trade. All soldiers get civilian qualifications.

Basic training

When they first join the Army, soldiers learn basic military skills. This will include things like how to handle and fire a weapon and how to live outdoors. Soldiers will also learn how to look after themselves and their kit, keeping their environment clean and tidy. Basic training normally takes 14 weeks, but the process differs for some soldier jobs and for people joining as officers or as Territorials.

Trade training

After soldiers have learned military skills, they progress to trade training. The length of this will depend on the job they have chosen; it varies from a few weeks for those training as drivers to three years for those who will go on to become nurses. Training is delivered by experienced soldiers and civilians on well-equipped bases, and will often be recognised with civilian qualifications like NVQs.
