Can I join?

Joining the Army can feel like a big step. But you don’t need to make your mind up right now. There’s a process which helps check that you’re right for the Army, and that the Army is right for you. As part of this process, you’ll also get help choosing a job. This section will tell you more about what’s involved and show you where to get started.

Both the TA and the Regulars have certain entry requirements like passing a medical and being under a certain age. After that, the rest is up to you.

We may be called the British Army but soldiers from other countries have a proud tradition of service with us. You may need to have lived in the UK first for certain jobs.

As a part of the selection process you’ll need to meet some basic fitness standards. We’ve outlined these in a simple table so you know what to expect.

You need to be 16 to join as a soldier or 18 to become an officer. If you’re not 16 yet the Army Cadet Force or our Camouflage website are good ways to get involved.

A full medical examination is part of the selection process. Check before you apply to see if any medical conditions or ongoing illnesses could hold you back.

A criminal conviction does not necessarily exclude you from joining the Army. Be honest about your past and the Army could be a great way to make a fresh start.
