About us

The Battalion is part of the 1st Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) Brigade. The Brigade comprises about 6,000 personnel, both Regular and Reserve. It combines for the first time all the ISR assets of the Army under one unified command, including about 60% of the Intelligence Corps.

5 MI Battalion is paired with 1 MI Battalion, a Regular unit currently based in Germany, but moving back to the UK (Catterick) in 2015. 1 MI and 5 MI Battalions will work very closely together, including combined training exercises.

Because the primary role of the Battalion is to support 1st ISR Bde and 1 MI Bn, we require our people to be proficient in our core skill — operational intelligence (OPINT).

To aid career development it is possible for people develop specialist skills in other Intelligence disciplines, however these are not the core work of the battalion. Specialisms include Human Intelligence (HUMINT), Imagery Intelligence (IMINT), Weapons Intelligence (WIS), Exploitation (EXP), Signals Intelligence (SIGINT), Psychological Operations (PSYOPS) and utilising language skills as Military Linguists.
