Who We Are

C Company 4 MERCIAN consists of a Company Headquarters, 2 Rifle Platoons and an Assault Pioneer Platoon. As a TA Infantry Company most of our soldiers join to be infantry. For those looking for something a little different we have our own Assault Pioneer Platoon.

What We Do

As you would expect we cover all the infantry skills. During recruit training you learn the basics. Then during exercises these basics are developed, built on and practised. Skills taught include:

  • weapon training, covering most infantry weapon systems
  • marksmanship
  • signals training
  • navigation by day and night
  • chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear training on the equipment and drills
  • driver training
  • Law of Armed Conflict
  • leadership training
  • tactics
  • fitness

Our training drill nights are on Tuesday evenings, weekend exercises and a 2 week annual training camp. The weekend exercises are at training areas all over the UK and the annual camp is normally in the UK, although these have been in Cyprus, America, Ascension Island and Gibraltar.

Assault Pioneers

These are the Battalion's battlefield engineers. They are trained to use a range of engineering equipment from power tools to explosives to support the Battalion in

  • mobility
  • light bridging
  • watermanship
  • minefield breaching
  • counter nmobility
  • obstacles
  • anti-tank mine laying,
  • explosive demolition
  • survivability
  • field defences
  • water purification

Whatever your final role in the Company everyone is a soldier first and undergoes a comprehensive initial training before specialising.

Operational Deployments

Since 2000 there have always been soldiers from the Company serving on operations somewhere in the world. Members of C Company have completed over 65 operational tours. Of late these have predominantly been in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Adventurous Training

C Company gives you superb opportunities. But it's not all military training, Adventurous Training is an important part of life in the Army. It can be distinguished from sport in that it involves progressive, challenging activity, by definition involving some risk to life and limb that requires individuals to develop qualities of fitness, courage and endurance. It is also a valuable way of developing leadership skills required in the Army in peacetime and on operations - indeed the qualities and skills that are needed in most organisations. While training you are paid by the Army. All TA soldiers receive pay equivalent to the Regular Army, which varies according to rank, role and commitment. You are paid for every hour of your training. And, if you complete your minimum commitment, you receive an annual tax-free bonus called a bounty.

But money isn't everything, you will make some great friends, experience activities not normally possible in civvy street and enjoy a social life with a difference.
