Mortar Platoon lay down fire
Who We Are
4 MERCIAN has its own integral fire support in the Mortar Platoon. They are equipped with three 81mm Mortars, so they can engage enemy targets with high explosive (HE) ammunition, smoke or illuminating rounds at night. The Platoon has an officer and 38 soldiers.
81mm Mortar
The battle-proven L16A2 81mm Mortar delivers accurate HE, smoke or illuminating rounds out to a range of 5,650m. The mortar can be man-packed in three loads, but mortar detachments are normally vehicle-borne. The mortar provides an infantry battalion with its own indirect fire support.
