1 R IRISH form a baseline in during Op BANNER The Battalion did not serve in Northern Ireland originally as the Ulster Defence Regiment (UDR) were formed to provide the footprint Battalions in Northern Ireland.  Eventually we began to do more and more tours of Northern Ireland. 

Since 2000 the Battalion has helped to keep the peace in Northern Ireland through numerous operational tours in such places as Belfast, Londonderry, East Tyrone and South Armagh.  Whether in the Counter-Terrorist or Riot Control role the Battalion has learnt vital skills we require to enforce peace worldwide.
