Since the formation of The Rifles, Riflemen have had to make the ultimate sacrifice and give their lives in the line of duty.  Many more have been injured. So that we will never forget the sacrifice they made for Queen, Country and Regiment they are commemorated here.

Rifleman Sheldon Steel, from 5th Battalion The Rifles (5 RIFLES), was killed in Afghanistan on Sunday 27 November 2011.

steelRifleman Steel was taking part in a foot patrol to disrupt insurgent freedom of movement and to reassure the local population in Babaji, in the Lashkar Gah district, which is in the Nahr-e Saraj (South) area of operations, when he was caught in the blast from an improvised explosive device (IED). He was airlifted to the field hospital at Camp Bastion where he was declared killed in action.


Lance Corporal Peter Eustace from 2nd Battalion The Rifles (2 RIFLES) was killed in Afghanistan on Wednesday 16 November 2011. 

eustaceLance Corporal Peter Eustace  had deployed to Afghanistan as a mortar fire controller with Delhi Company of 1st Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment (1 YORKS), attached to Combined Force Nahr-e Saraj (North) in Helmand province. He was killed by an improvised explosive device (IED) on 16 November 2011 while conducting a joint patrol with his Company and the Afghan National Army.

 

Lance Corporal Jonathan James McKinlay, of B Company, 1st Battalion The Rifles, was killed in Afghanistan on 14 September 2011.

Lance Corporal McKinlay deployed to Afghanistan as a battle casualty replacement in June 2011, having recently qualified as a Bravo Mortar Fire Controller. He was based in Checkpoint Chaabak in the Nahr-e Saraj (South) district of Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was killed by a burst of small arms fire on Wednesday, 14 September 2011, while on patrol with his team and members of the Afghan Uniform Police (AUP) in a village near to his checkpoint.

 

Lieutenant Daniel John Clack from 1st Battalion The Rifles, was killed in Afghanistan on 12 August 2011.

Lieutenant Clack was killed while leading a ten-man patrol into the village of Dactran to speak to the local nationals and discuss a shura due to take place the next day. Approximately 150 metres from the front gate his patrol was struck by an improvised explosive device, killing him and injuring five other members of his patrol.
 

 

Corporal Mark Anthony Palin from 1st Battalion The Rifles was killed in Afghanistan on 18 July 2011.

 
Corporal Palin deployed to Afghanistan in April 2011 with B Company, 1st Battalion The Rifles, as the second-in-command of a twelve-man multiple. He was based at Checkpoint Jeker in the Nahr-e Saraj (South) district of Helmand province, Afghanistan.  On the morning of 18 July 2011, whilst guiding a patrol, he was killed by an improvised explosive device. He was on an operation to clear and exploit a cache of nearly complete improvised explosive device components that had been discovered late the night before.

 

Rifleman Martin Jon Lamb from 1st Battalion The Rifles was killed in Afghanistan on Sunday 5 June 2011. 

Rifleman (Rfn) Lamb deployed to Afghanistan in April 2011 as a member of 'A' Company, Reconnaissance Platoon, operating out of the newly established temporary Checkpoint Zarawar, in the contested area of Alikozai, in the Nahr-e Saraj District of Helmand province.  The checkpoint is an area of known insurgent activity, to the north of Nahr-e Saraj, and Rfn Lamb was supporting the local people in the fight against that insurgency.  On the afternoon of 5 June 2011, Rfn Lamb was killed by an improvised explosive device (IED) while on a patrol in the Haji Kareen area of the Nahr-e Saraj (South) district.

 

Colour Serjeant Kevin Charles Fortuna A Company, 1st Battalion The Rifles, was killed in Afghanistan on Monday 23 May 2011.

In the early evening of Monday 23 May 2011, Colour Serjeant* Fortuna was leading a patrol to disrupt enemy forces when he was killed by an improvised explosive device in the Sayedabad Kalay area of the Nahr-e Saraj (South) district of Helmand province.




Major James Joshua Bowman, RIFLES, serving with 1st Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles, was killed in Afghanistan on Tuesday 13 July 2010.

Major Bowman, serving as part of Combined Force Nahr-e Saraj (South), was killed in a suspected premeditated attack by a member of the Afghan National Army.

 

 

 

Rifleman Mark Turner 3 RIFLES was killed in Afghanistan on Sunday 4 April 2010.

Rifleman Turner was killed as a result of an explosion that happened while he was on a foot patrol against insurgents near Forward Operating Base Zeebrugge, in the Kajaki area of Helmand Province.

 

 

 

Rifleman Daniel Holkham 3 RIFLES was killed in Afghanistan on Saturday 27 March 2010.

Rfn Holkham, aged 19, died in an explosion that was caused by a suicide bomber, who detonated a device near to the Sangin Bazaar.

 




 

 Serjeant Steven Campbell 3 RIFLES was killed in Afghanistan on Monday 22 March 2010.

Serjeant Campbell, aged 30, was killed when an improvised explosive device detonated while he was patrolling with his platoon around 3km south of Sangin district centre.





 

Corporal Stephen Thompson 1 RIFLES - serving as part of the 3 RIFLES Battle Group, was killed in Afghanistan on Sunday 7 March 2010.

Corporal Thompson died as a result of an explosion in an area 3km south of Sangin district centre, Helmand province.






Lance Corporal Tom Keogh 4 RIFLES - part of the 3 RIFLES Battle Group, was killed in Afghanistan on Sunday 7 March 2010.

Lance Corporal Keogh was killed by a gunshot wound during a small arms engagement in Sangin, Helmand province. He was in Patrol Base Bariolai when he was killed.






Rifleman Liam Maughan 3 RIFLES - killed in Afghanistan Saturday 6th March 2010.

Rifleman Maughan died from wounds received as a result of small arms fire which occurred near Sangin, in Helmand province, during the morning of Saturday 6 March 2010.

 

 


Rifleman Jonathon Allott 3 RIFLES -  killed in Afghanistan Friday 5 March 2010.

Rifleman Allott died from wounds received as a result of an explosion which occurred near Sangin, in Helmand province, during the morning of Friday 5 March 2010.






Corporal Richard Green 3 RIFLES - killed in Afghanistan on Tuesday 2 March 2010.
 
Corporal Green died as a result of small arms fire near Sangin in Helmand province.

 

 

 

 

Rifleman Carlo Apolis of 4th Battalion The Rifles (4 RIFLES), serving as part of the 3 RIFLES Battle Group - killed in Afghanistan on 1 March 2010.

Rifleman Apolis was killed by a gunshot wound resulting from small arms fire in Sangin, Helmand province. He was on a foot patrol about 700 metres east of Patrol Base Blenheim, taking part in a wider operation conducted by the 3 RIFLES Battle Group to expand security around the district centre.

 

Rifleman Martin Kinggett 4 RIFLES serving with the 3 RIFLES Battle Group - Afghanistan Thursday 25 February 2010.

Rifleman Kinggett was killed by a gun shot wound in Sangin, Helmand Province.  He was on a routine foot patrol, part of a larger operation to provide security for the local population in Sangin. During the patrol he and his comrades were required to provide covering fire for the evacuation of an injured colleague and Rifleman Kinggett was shot and killed.

Rifleman Mark Marshall of 6 RIFLES  serving with 3 RIFLES - Afghanistan Sunday 14 February 2010

Rifleman Mark Marshall was killed when an IED detonated while he was on a routine foot patrol providing reassurance and security to the local population near Forward Operating Base Inkerman to the north east of Sangin in Helmand province

 

 

Lance Corporal Daniel Cooper of 3 RIFLES - Afghanistan on Sunday 24th January 2010

Lance Corporal Cooper died from wounds received as a result of an explosion near Sangin, in Helmand province, during the morning of 24 January 2010.

 

 

 

Rifleman Peter Aldridge of 4 RIFLES - Afghanistan on Friday 22 January 2010.

Rifleman Aldridge, a soldier from A Company, 4 RIFLES, serving as part of the 3 RIFLES Battle Group, was killed by an explosion near Sangin in Helmand province. He was on a foot patrol, part of a larger operation to provide security for the local population in Sangin, when the explosion happened.

 

 

Corporal Lee Brownson of 3 RIFLES - Afghanistan on Friday 15 January 2010.

Corporal Lee Brownson was killed as a result of an IED explosion while on patrol near Sangin, in Helmand Province.

Rifleman Aidan Howell of 3 RIFLES - Afghanistan Monday 28th December 2009.

Rifleman Howell was killed as a result of an explosion that happened near Forward Operating Base Zeebrugge, in the Kajaki area of Helmand Province, during the afternoon of 28 D ecember 2009. He had been on patrol when an improvised explosive device detonated.

 

 

Lance Corporal Christopher Roney 3 RIFLES - Afghanistan Tuesday 22 December 2009. 

Lance Corporal Roney died of his wounds following an engagement in Sangin, Northern Helmand, Afghanistan. At the time, his platoon was working out of Patrol Base Almas, providing security, reassurance and freedom of movement for the local population in support of the Government of Afghanistan. 

 

 

Lance Corporal David Leslie Kirkness 3 RIFLES - Afghanistan Tuesday 15 December 2009

Lance Corporal Kirkness was killed following a suicide improvised explosive device blast on a route into central Sangin, northern Helmand, Afghanistan.

 

 

 

Rifleman James Stephen Brown 3 RIFLES - Afghanistan on Tuesday 15 December 2009

Following a suicide improvised explosive device blast on a route into central Sangin, northern Helmand, Afghanistan. Rifleman Brown died on his way to hospital in Camp Bastion from injuries sustained in the incident.

 

 

Rifleman Andrew Fentiman 7 RIFLES - Afghanistan 15 November 2009

Rifleman Andrew Ian Fentiman of 7 RIFLES Rifleman Andrew Fentiman was killed as a result of small arms fire whilst on a foot patrol near Sangin in central Helmand province during the morning of 15 November 2009.  He was serving with 3 RIFLES at the time.

 

 

Rifleman Samuel Bassett 4 RIFLES - Afghanistan 8 November 2009

Rifleman Bassett, from 1 Platoon, A Company, 4th Battalion The Rifles, died in hospital following an improvised explosive device explosion in the area of Sangin, northern Helmand. He was serving as part of 3rd Battalion The Rifles (3 RIFLES) Battle Group.

 

 
Rifleman Philip Allen 2 RIFLES - Afghanistan 9 November 2009

Rifleman Philip Allen from 2nd Battalion The Rifles (2 RIFLES) was killed in Afghanistan on Saturday 7 November 2009. Rifleman Allen was killed following the detonation of an improvised explosive device near Sangin in central Helmand province. He was serving with A Coy 4 RIFLES attached to 3 RIFLES at the time. 

 

Serjeant Phillip Scott 3 RIFLES - Afghanistan 5 November 2009

Serjeant Phillip Scott of 3rd Battalion The Rifles (3 RIFLES) was killed in Afghanistan yesterday, Thursday 5 November 2009. Serjeant Scott died following an improvised explosive device explosion in northern Helmand province.

Acting Serjeant McGrath was killed as a result of an explosion in Gereshk district, Helmand province, on the afternoon of 16 September 2009, dying from his wounds before he could be extracted to hospital.

Serjeant Paul McAleese was killed by an IED whilst leading a foot patrol in Sangin district, Helmand province.









Rifleman Daniel Wild 2 RIFLES - Afghanistan 13 August 2009

Rifleman Daniel Wild was killed near Forward Operating Base Jackson in Sangin, Afghanistan, on Thursday 13 August 2009.









Captain Mark Hale 2 RIFLES - Afghanistan 13 August 2009

Captain Mark Hale died in hospital at Camp Bastion on 13 August 2009 after being caught in an IED (improvised explosive device) blast helping an injured soldier to safety whilst on patrol near Sangin.

Rifleman Toge was killed as a result of an explosion that happened whilst he was conducting a foot patrol close to Forward Operating Base KEENAN, near Gereshk in central Helmand Province.

 Rifleman Thatcher was killed in Afghanistan on Tuesday 2 June 2009.  Rifleman Thatcher died as a result of an explosion whilst he was on a patrol near Gereshk in Helmand province.

Rifleman Sheldon was killed in Afghanistan on the evening of Thursday 7 May 2009 as a result of an explosion when travelling in a Jackal vehicle near Sangin in Helmand province.

 

 

 

Corporal Tom Gaden 1 RIFLES - Afghanistan 25 February 2009

Corporal Tom Gaden was killed in action on Wednesday 25 February 2009 when the vehicle in which he and two other Riflemen of his Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team (OMLT) were travelling was struck by an IED (improvised explosive device) on the highway east of Gereshk. He was on patrol with his OMLT with whom he had been operating since January 2009.

 

 

Lance Corporal Paul 'Uppers' Upton 1 RIFLES - Afghanistan 25 February 2009

Acting Lance Corporal Paul Upton was killed in action when the vehicle in which he and two other Riflemen of his OMLT were travelling was struck by an IED on the highway east of Gereshk on Wednesday 25 February 2009. He was on patrol with his OMLT with whom he had been operating since April 2008.

 

 

 

 

Rifleman Jamie Gunn 1 RIFLES - Afghanistan 25 February 2009    Rifleman Jamie Gunn was killed in action when the vehicle in which he and two other Riflemen of his OMLT were travelling was struck by an IED on the highway east of Gereshk on Wednesday 25 February 2009. He was on patrol with his OMLT with whom he had been operating since April 2008.

 

 


 

Lance Corporal Stephen Kingscott 1 RIFLES - Afghanistan 16 February 2009

Lance Corporal Kingscott died during the assault of an enemy position during a deliberate operation against insurgents in the Nawa district of Helmand province.

 

 

 

 

Corporal Daniel Nield 1 RIFLES - Afghanistan 30 January 2009

Corporal Nield was killed as a result of an explosion, believed to have been caused by a Rocket Propelled Grenade, during a contact with enemy forces during a deliberate operation north of Musa Qaleh in Helmand province. He was deployed as the Forward Air Controller (FAC) in a Fire Support Team (FST) of 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery. They were attached to an Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team (OMLT) from his own unit, S Company, 1st Battalion, The Rifles, working alongside the troops of the Afghan National Army (ANA).

 

 

Acting Corporal Richard Robinson 1 RIFLES - Afghanistan 17 January 2009

Acting Corporal Richard (Robbo) Robinson died as a result of enemy fire during an ambush north of Sangin District Centre while on a patrol to dominate ground with his Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team (OMLT) and the Afghan National Army (ANA) platoon with whom he had been operating since September 2008.

 

 

Serjeant Chris Reed 6 RIFLES - Afghanistan 1 January 2009

Serjeant Chris Reed of 6th Battalion The Rifles (6 RIFLES) was killed in action in the Garmsir District of Helmand Province. Serjeant Reed was attached to C Company of the 1st Battalion The Rifles (1 RIFLES) Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team (OMLT) Battle Group and was Second in Command of his team of 8 Riflemen working alongside their Afghan National Army (ANA) counterparts. The OMLTs assist and teach the ANA in all aspects of military operations. Serjeant Reed was killed by an improvised explosive device whilst conducting a vehicle patrol alongside the ANA in the desert of Helmand.

 

 

Rifleman Stuart Nash 1 RIFLES - Afghanistan 17 December 2008

Rifleman Stuart Nash, aged 21, from Australia, was killed in action during combat in Zarghun Kalay, Nad e Ali District, Helmand province. He was wounded as he was covering comrades from a compound rooftop while working as part of the 1 RIFLES Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team (OMLT) Battle Group. His fellow riflemen administered first aid and he was evacuated by a Medical Emergency Response Team helicopter, but subsequently died of his wounds.

 

 


Rifleman Edward Vakabua 4 RIFLES - Iraq 6th July 2007

Rifleman Edward Vakabua, aged 23, from Nailuva Road in Suva, Fiji, was serving in Mortar Platoon attached to 7 Platoon, B Company, 4th Battalion The Rifles.  His death was as a result of an accident that took place at the Basra Palace base in Basra City, southern Iraq.    

 

 

Corporal John Rigby 4 RIFLES - Iraq 22nd June 2007

Corporal Rigby, aged 24, from Rye, died from injuries sustained by a roadside bomb attack in Basra.  He made a judgement that someone had to expose themselves and be ready to engage enemy gunmen and bombers in order to protect the vehicle and its driver and commander, and it is typical of his courage, selflessness and leadership that he chose to do it himself instead of ordering one of his beloved Riflemen to do so.
   

 

Major Paul Harding 4 RIFLES - Iraq 20th June 2007

Major Harding, aged 48, died as a result of an indirect fire attack on the Provincial Joint Coordination Centre in Basra in the early hours of the morning, local time. With his death, The RIFLES lost one of its most senior, long-serving and admired Riflemen, and the country lost a veteran soldier of deep personal integrity, professional excellence, wisdom, experience and simple decency.  

   

 

Corporal Rodney Wilson 4 RIFLES - Iraq 7th June 2007

Corporal Wilson, aged 30, was killed in the Al Atiyah district, north west of Basra City at about 0220 hours. His patrol was part of a search and detention operation led by 2nd Battalion The Royal Welch when they came under attack from small arms fire and rocket propelled grenades.  The patrol took casualties and, despite the heavy fire, Corporal Wilson stepped in to evacuate one of the wounded when he himself was hit. 
   

 

Corporal Jeremy Brookes 4 RIFLES - Iraq 21st May 2007

Corporal Brookes, aged 28, died as a result of injuries sustained from a small arms fire attack on his patrol in Basra City. He was commanding a Bulldog Armoured Vehicle involved in escorting a routine re-supply convoy in the Al Tuwaysa district of the city at approximately 1530 Local Time when the attack happened.  Despite his colleagues' best efforts to provide first aid and evacuate him to Basra Palace, he sadly died from his injuries.
   

 

Rifleman Paul Donnachie 2 RIFLES - Iraq 29th April 2007

Rifleman Donnachie, aged 18, died from his injuries as a result of a shooting during a routine patrol in the Al Ashar district of Basra City at 0930hrs.  He and other members of his patrol were taking part in an escorting patrol for a police training team. It was while Rifleman Donnachie was dismounted and checking part of the patrol's route that he was shot. Rifleman Donnachie was immediately evacuated to Basra Palace, but sadly he subsequently died from his injuries.
   
 


Rifleman Aaron Lincoln 2 RIFLES - Iraq 2nd April 2007

Rifleman Lincoln,18, died as a result of injuries sustained during a security patrol close to Basra Palace, in Iraq.  During the course of the patrol a gunman opened fire and during the 'follow up', Rifleman Lincoln was hit by small arms fire.   He was immediately evacuated to Basra Palace and then to the field hospital at Basra Air Station for further medical treatment, but sadly he died of his injuries.  
 
  
 

Rifleman Daniel Lee Coffey 2 RIFLES - Iraq 27th February 2007

Rifleman Coffey, 21, died as a result of injuries sustained during a patrol in north Basra. He was returning to his base at the Shatt-Al-Arab Hotel after taking part in a task mentoring the Iraqi Police Service when his patrol was ambushed by two gunmen.   Rifleman Coffey was on top cover providing protection for the patrol vehicles when he came under small arms fire attack from the gunmen.
