Pipes And Drums

The Pipes and Drums role in the Battalion is purely Piping and Drumming unless they are deployed on operations. A lot of the time is spent practising and perfecting new selections and learning new tunes.

The Band

Pipers and Drummers have always travelled everywhere with their Battalions, and many stories have been told throughout the years of Pipers and Drummers leading the troops into battle and playing "Over the Top" etc. Thankfully this has changed and nowadays Pipers and Drummers are employed in an alternative role when going on operational duties.

On Operations and Exercises, Pipers and Drummers are currently employed as Medics and Armoured Fighting Vehicle Drivers and Commanders. Through this Role a young Piper or Drummer can quickly gain a number of driving qualifications and can attain medical skills up to Combat Medical Technician, Class 2 standard.

Pipers and Drummers are also fully trained soldiers to the same standard as Guardsman; therefore if they were called upon they can turn their hand to this role too.

During the Falklands Conflict in 1982 the Pipes and Drums of the 2nd Battalion were deployed and operated with distinction in the Reconnaissance Platoon, and during the Gulf War in 1991, the Pipes and Drums of the 1st Battalion were deployed (throughout the Battalion) as a Machine Gun Platoon with six members attached to each Company.

When commitments allow the Pipes and Drums also partake in the Edinburgh Military Tattoo and recently travelled with it to Wellington, New Zealand.

In September 2007 the Band took part in the Kremlin Zoria  Military Tattoo in Moscow.  In 2009, The Pipes & Drums will travel to Estes Park, Colorado, California, New Hampshire and Basel, Switzerland to represent the Regiment at International events.
