1 Mercian

1 Mercian on parade in The Mall

1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment (Cheshire) is a light role battalion based in Marne Barracks, Catterick Village, North Yorkshire. It is preparing for a possible operation deployment in 2010.

The Battalion takes its heritage from the 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment, and still draws most of its soldiers from Cheshire and the Wirral. It is this legacy that makes it such an effective Unit within the Mercian Regiment, built from the merger of 3 former proud county regiments.

1 Mercian maintains its links with the County in a number of ways. We march through the cities, towns and boroughs whenever we can and are proud to have received the Freedoms of Chester, Ellesmere Port and Crewe. We have plans to march through Birkenhead and Macclesfield in the near future. All of our soldiers continue to wear the Cheshire cerise and buff diamond on the right sleeves of our combat dress. This is known as our Tactical Recognition Flash or TRF.

When on parade the Battalion are still referred to as the '22nd' and we wear oak leaves when in the presence of royalty. Our Colonel in Chief, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, is keen that we maintain this tradition, dating back to the Battle of Dettingen, and we have done so in his presence twice in the past 18 months. Our careers advisors are in offices in Chester, Birkenhead, Warrington, Stockport and Crewe. All can advise men of Cheshire how to join us.
