Third Battalion (3 PWRR)

3 PWRR soldier on exercise

3 PWRR is the Territorial Army Infantry Battalion for the South East of England. Its soldiers train on Wednesday evenings and on one or two weekends a month, plus an annual training period of two weeks. Next year this will be in Eastern Europe. The Battalion is operationally focussed and has officers and soldiers deployed in both Afghanistan and Iraq right now.  They are taking time out from their normal civilian jobs - which are protected by legislation - to experience life at the sharp end of the British Army's work today.

The Battalion has bases all over the South East, and they are easy to get to.  Why not come and visit to see us training on a Wednesday? Just call the number at the bottom of this page. Here's where are:

  • Canterbury (Battalion HQ and HQ Company; Patrols Platoon, Regimental Band, Signals, Logistics, Transport and Medics)
  • Dover (Patrols Platoon)
  • Farnham and Camberley (A Company and 81 mm Mortar Patoon)
  • Brighton and Worthing (B Company and Anti Tank (Javelin Missile) Platoon)
  • Rochester (C Company and Infantry Combat Engineer (Assault Pioneer) Platoon)
  • Portsmouth (D Company, Machine Gun Platoon and Regimental Band section. Outstation planned for Winchester)

3 PWRR is proud of its record on operations, alongside the Regular Army.  A soldier was recently awarded a 'Mention in Despatches' (MiD) for his personal courage, and others continue to impress.  At home, the Battalion is often in the headlines for its achievements in competitions.  In 2008, personnel from PWRR won both the TA and Regular Queen's Medal at the prestigeous Bisley shooting competition. This has never been done before! And the Battalion team were crowned TA champions for the second year running.  Just to finish off, they won the pistol competition too.

Life in 3 PWRR is not all about 'green' training.  The social life is great and opportunities for sport and adventurous training are good.  If you show commitment to the core military training, the Battalion can offer you courses in skiing, sub-aqua diving, sailing, parachuting, canoeing, mountaineering and more.  And sport is also a big thing in 3

PWRR; we have our own excellent football team

(and professionally qualified coaches!)

Serving with 3 PWRR as an officer or soldier will give you an unrivalled experience. It's an adventure you shouldn't miss. You will gain life skills and qualifications that will help you progress in your civilian career. And if you show the potential, there is the opportunity to rise through the ranks and find yourself in command of infantry soldiers.  Or you can take one of the many specialist management routes available. Many of our people regard the Battalion as an important 'second career'.  Many have been with the Battalion for years, and have trained and served all over the world.  The current Commanding Officer was a Territorial Army soldier who started as a Private.
