Parade

St Patricks Day Parade

On Saturday 14th the regiment came together at Clive Barracks, part of the sprawling Tern Hill Army base in north Shropshire which is now the historic regiment's home, for its traditional St Patrick's Day celebrations.

Three days before St Patrick's Day itself, as many of the soldiers had other engagements on Tuesday, hundreds of soldiers and their families gathered to celebrate

Operational Awards Recipients

Operational Honours and Awards

Three soldiers from the Royal Irish Regiment have been awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross. It is the first time the honour has been awarded to three members of the same regiment.

Eighteen soldiers from the Royal Irish Regiment have been mentioned in the Operational Honours and Awards List: 6th March 2009. A further five have received commendations.

What a weekend! Who would have thought there would have been such an amazing turn-out from the public for our homecoming parades. We would like to thank everyone who came to welcome us home - we particularly liked the cheer that went up as we passed in front of City Hall in Belfast!

We would also like to thank everyone for letting the parades pass peacefully.

Captain Dougie Beattie MC

Captain Beattie Awarded Military Cross

Captain Doug Beattie, 41, originally from Portadown, was a key figure in driving the Taleban out of a small town in southern Afghanistan last September.

Military officials said 'time and time again' he led his troops in battle in Garmisir, holding the town for 14 days. Capt Beattie, who completed his Afghan tour in January, said he received the award in memory of his fallen comrades.

He said it was 'amazing' to receive any form of recognition.

'It is a very great moment but also a very poignant one.

'To a degree I am also receiving the award for all the people that are still out there in Afghanistan and all the people who did not return - some of my very good friends, who will never see their home again.'
