Exercise ULU RAJAH : 2004

Patrolling throug the jungle on Exercise ULU RAJAH 2004 in Brunei After returning from their 6-week rotation through PSNI Maydown in Londonderry, C Company began to re-role for the jungle. 1 R IRISH were to provide the OPFOR (enemy) for the Gurkhas in Brunei for their biennial test exercise.

Determined to prove them a worthy opponent, C Company began an intense period of physical training in the hills of Inverness to ensure that they were as fit as possible before arriving in the difficult jungle conditions.  As well as the intense physical preparations there were new drills and skills to be learnt for the phases where they were to be staying in the "trees" (jungle).

Lt Shoukru and Lt Forrest had both recently completed the Jungle Leaders course and, along with Cpl McAnulty and Sgt Kane from A Company, began teaching the Company the essentials for survival in the demanding conditions.

On arrival in Brunei there were a few days spent acclimatising before the first few weeks in the jungle for the "Jungle School" Phase.  Once proficient in living in the jungle, the Company then returned to camp for one night before deploying into the jungle for the OPFOR phase.

Patrols were sent out to leave tracks for the Gurkha Tracking Teams to follow, and to contact the Gurkha patrols and provide realism.  The remainder of the time was spent building a believable "enemy" location for the Gurkhas to attack.  The three platoons of C Company had three different locations within a Company Main Defensive Position (MDP) and a lot of thought was put into how the Gurkhas would attack.

Once the attack came C Company put up a good fight but, as the enemy are inclined to do, lost against the might of the Gurkha assault.

Returning to Inverness as a Jungle Qualified Company, having done an outstanding job in Brunei and having had an excellent exercise, C Company began training in earnst for the coming tour in Iraq.
